However (and I should surely not tell YOU , but the OP) pine
'automagically' supports DSN if the setup of
Enable-Delivery-Status-Notification is ticked. When one does control-X
I get

Send message?

^C Cancel N No D DSNOpts

If I press ? I obtain
What's DSNOpts? See Enable-Delivery-Status-Notification in config screen.

If you do M S C and search for Enable-Delivery-Status-Notification, its
help will tell you all about the "D" reply after control-X.

Works like a charm for me (and I do not even have to set smtp-server to
use the sendmail on my own linux box).
