Will Alpine support the IDLE command?  (or maybe it does?  I don't remember
if it was on that mailing list that I remember seeing the IDLE command 
mentioned recently.)

IIRC, that essentially turns IMAP into a push protocol, so there's less
polling of the server (do you have new mail now?  Now?  How about now?).
Though I don't know if that would affect this issue, with multiple copies
running simultaneously.
