If it's an mbox, then you're not going to be able to have multiple clients accessing it at the same time. I'm betting that's what you'pre seeing. Thunderbird probably reopens the connection, but just doesn't tell you about it :) However, if it's a maildir-type store, then concurrent access works just fine. FWIW, I run cyrus imapd and it works great. I typically leave 3 or 4 pines open (two on my work machine, one at home) and a Thunderbird all the time and get no problems whatsoever.
