Are you using vim 7.0?  I don't know if that makes any difference.

I admit I could have misunderstood, but the author of vim said basically that
vim was *required* to return an error for things like this, and 
mentioned 'ex' in his description.  This is where I'm getting more
vague, but I thought he said it had to do with backward compatibility with
ex.

I should probably subscribe to the vim-help list and ask about this...
But the other person's problem with emacs shows that maybe there is
something that pine could do to quiet the warning?
