Most spam is sent using "Forged" from addresses. This is like putting someone else's return address on a very large junk snail-mail mailing so that the mailer can avoid all the bad address returns. The person named as the sender had NOTHING to do with sending it. The domain's mail exchanger has no real good way of determining if the sender was authorized by the return address to send the mail.
