There is no way to use the dead letter file transparently. If pine is given a chance before it is killed it will save the message being composed in ~/.pine-interrupted-mail on unix or intruptd on Windows and then when you restart pine and type Compose you will be asked if you want to Continue INTERRUPTED composition? That will only happen if pine receives a signal alerting it to the fact that it is being killed (like a SIGHUP). As a backup, it also saves the composition to the dead letter file every few keystrokes just in case but there is no simple way to use that dead letter file, you just have to know about it.
