The above command I ran was the system imapd (sorry 'bout that). When I run the courier-imap I get this: $ /usr/lib/courier-imap/bin/imapd Library/Mail * PREAUTH Ready. INFO: LOGIN, user=mankoff, ip=[127.0.0.1], protocol=IMAP But still get this w/ telnet: $ telnet localhost 143 Trying ::1... telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused Trying 127.0.0.1... telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused telnet: Unable to connect to remote host I have managed a partial work-around which is to use the PostfixEnabler OS X program. That provides UW-imap (which I think doesn't work with Maildirs) and when activated I can telnet to 143. I activated this program but replaced the config files to run the courier-imap program. It appears to work, based on ps.
