This happens to me as well, and depends on the way the message was sent. 
Personally I regard the mail clients who send message that way as behaving 
badly (as people doing top posting, sending HTML mail and alike) but there 
is nothing one can do to coerce them to behave better (for top posting and 
HTML mail I do filtering at procmail level).

"carrot" leaves me perplexed, but I suppose I understand what you mean. 
What I do is to systematically use control-J (justify) on each paragraph 
pf the reply. It is not a great hassle since I'd have to edit the reply 
(cutting irrelevant quoted parts) anyhow.

Sorry but either your or my agent wordwrapped the text so I could not see 
it (but I knew what you meant !)
