I guess I should have also mentioned that this command depends on the server implementing the SCAN command. I only use scan once in a great while and find it can be useful if I know what I'm looking for. It really was implemented as a way to do fgrep for people who were used to being able to run fgrep on their /usr/spool/mail files. A more accurate or more featureful scan would be much more expensive to implement.
