Pine hangs when I open unable to open inbox

Whenever I ope pine it gives me an "Opening Inbox" message and just hangs.
I have tried renaming my /var/spool/mail/<user> file as suggested by some of
the hits in my google search, and trying again but I still get the same
error.
Has anyone else experienced this problem before? Help much appreciated.
