greeting failed error

I use serialmail with diald and ppp (RedHat 7.3). I call maildirsmtp from 
the ip-up script. Unfortunately I get a lot of errors like this:

ip-up: serialsmtp: fatal: connected but greeting failed

Any ideas of what could be wrong, or how I can debug it?
