I'm sorry, I was under the impression that there are 2 sets of each list...

whitelist.txt used by ASK only, and whitelist_local.txt which you can 
manually edit
and is also used by ASK.  This would prevent a conflict in ASK...

I remember reading this in ChangeLog:

White/Ignore and Blacklists can be spread over multiple files. Only the
first one will be written to by ASK but all will be used to match. The sample
config file also includes a "-local" version of each list file suitable for
local editing (prevents conflicts).
