Random idioms crossing paths without the slightest chance of
connecting...

"Not For Hire" is frequently seen on commercial vehicles in the USA of
classes which face differing regulations depending on whether they are
used solely by the owner or if they are publicly available for hire,
such as towing vehicles and shipping vehicles. The label is not
mandatory, but it can avoid needing to justify yourself to police in
some cases and to avoid random pointless solicitations of work. One can
also find trucks explicitly labeled "Available For Hire" but much more
rarely.

For years I did not have anything like that in my sig and got a steady
stream of solicitations for work that I mostly could not take for a
variety of reasons related to commitments to existing clients/employers,
from people who got my address from a public technical forum of some
sort. I believe that many if not most were legitimate, not simply spam,
so they wasted real effort to compose and to respond politely. OTOH, I
can attribute almost all of my *successful* work opportunities since
2000 to initial contacts which came (passively) to me via newsgroups,
mailing lists, and social media.

I have used that notice in my sig for some time now and it correlates to
a drop in legit-seeming solicitations that I cannot accept, which is a
good thing. Alternative causal explanations include the fact that I've
experienced a drop in quality and the factoid (unsourced) that fewer
people have been paying attention to mailing lists like this one in
recent years.
