Battery question.

I've been using my Ansmann Energy 8 charger for awhile and it's working 
great.  I'm stocking up on new rechargable batteries for emergencies, but I 
have a question.  I know that battery capacity is increasing constantly.  AA 
NiMH batteries have upwards of 2500mah capacity...maybe more.  When I look 
at a D-cell NiMH, it has almost the same capacity as a AA does.  What's the 
point of a bigger battery if it has the same capacity?  Shouldn't a D-cell 
have about 4x more juice in it?
