But you get a greater MPG with diesel than you do with petrol
(unless you have the 5liter turbo charged diesel tractor engine ;) )

There was a time when diesel was seen as a greener alternative to petrol 
so more and more people switched.
And because of cheaper prices at the pumps, that made people think about 
changing over too.
So the vehicle companies started adding turbos and 'superchargers' to 
get the power up to make them more attractive to the buyers, to the 
effect that most of those use just as much diesel as a standard petrol 
engine.
Then it was noted that the 'old' diesel wasn't as 'green' as first thought.

So now you have the new "bio diesel" on sale.  A slight improvement in 
its 'green' factor, a slight dip in its 'mpg', but still much more cost 
effective that regular gas/petrol, (unless you have some souped up hulk 
of an engine).
