According to the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, average fuel mileage for passenger cars was 22.4 miles per gallon in 2004. 34 1/3 gallons of gas times 22.4 miles per gallon equals approx. 770 miles. Assuming five round trips to work and 20% non-commute driving, that's a 62-mile drive to work each way. Who drives that far for a minimum-wage job? -- D.F.
