I called the agency myself today and spoke to my caseworker there. According to 
her, I can keep the apartment for six months (as long as I pay the rent and 
provide proof that I have been hospitalized). After six months the Sec. 8 
assistance can be terminated. She didn't say it definitely would be terminated, 
though, only that it could. (And I suppose I could keep the apartment even then 
by paying the full market rent, although that wouldn't be practical because the 
full rent is roughly 5/7ths of my monthly income.)

I was told that the minimum stay in the program is four months, and could be 
extended to as much as 12. I suppose if I told the hospital program about the 
apartment situation they could discharge me after six months if I'm making 
progress.
