The last thing you want is a bunch of civilians on a plane with their 
own guns.

No matter how good the Americans think they are at handling a gun, that 
is a bad idea.  (And when I get my US Citizenship I'll be off to Walmart 
to get my own legal gun, so don't be thinking I am anti-gun mob either).

Imagine some poor guy with a turban on reaching in to his rucksack to 
get his packed lunch out and them some twitchy so and so putting a few 
rounds through the window at 36,000Ft.

I'd much prefer to have fully trained personal armed on board, (not just 
Marshall's. Make it so that all Military, Police, Guard or other 
'proffessional' passengers are allowed to be armed.  Or have some extra 
training course that frequent fliers could register with.
