I need to remove the LDFLAGS or else configure returns an error.

checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C
compiler cannot create executables

Without the LDFLAGS it runs configure without a problem
checking for BerkeleyDB library... -ldb
checking gif_lib.h usability... yes
checking gif_lib.h presence... yes
checking for gif_lib.h... yes
checking for DGifOpen in -lungif... yes

And compilation seems to works fine, too.
