If we are to apply typical IETF procedure for advancement of stuff up the standards track, then it's fine to remove stuff from a protocol if it can be shown that they're not in any kind of widespread use. Does anyone have a survey of SPF records using local part macros versus total SPF records? If that ratio is very small, it's safe to remove.
