When I do this, I get an exception raised, and that exception is passed
back to the email client via an SMTP error message. Note that I
explicitly *don't* get the "connection drop" issue with incorrect syntax
in the outgoing filter (although, I used to, and that's the original
problem I was attempting to solve by adding that exception handler that
you also did.)

FYI, I am running python-2.3.4-13.1 under Linux Fedora Core 3 on 32-bit
x86. What are you running?
