I think everything else in SM validates, or at least that's the idea.
Breaking validation intentionally is contrary to the project
goals/spirit.  At best, it should be a non-default configuration.

Yes, it's easier, but still requires code changes.  IMHO, if some
client uses initial-caps on a text input, the client vendor needs to
be shot.  That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard.  (But you can
still allow logins in this case by making sure to configure SM to
convert logins to lower case (insert caveats about IMAP servers with
case-sensitive accounts))

The other thing that is a strong reason not to start using something
other than "text" is that you can't just make the assumption that
everyone's logging in with a full email address.  This fails to
recognize all the systems where lusers log into their accounts and all
the rest of the administrators who've been thoughtful enough to use
the Login Manager plugin.
