Hi, I'm also new to Sylpheed and just had the exact same problem 2 days ago when I first tried to install Sylpheed 8.8.8. I eventually solved this issued by installing the Aspell as well as the GnuPG package (even if I don't use them). Them Sylpheed no more crashed at startup. Hope this will help.
