I remember a user having very similar problems with an older version of
IrfanView: When clicking the attchment, Sylpheed writes it on your
disk. In this moment, that image was exclusively opened and modified
by IrfanView, probably to add a preview or sth. . When Sylpheed tries
to clean up, i.e. remove the image, it crashed because the file was
locked by IrfanView.
After he installed a more recent IrfanView, his problems went away.
