Can't read messages created under Cygwin?

I've been using a variety of tools for email, including mutt, MH, MH-E,
and Sylpheed Claws. These all have the advantage of letting my keep my
mail in MH format, while still being able to switch among these tools.
However, I have to use MH and mutt on Cygwin on my Windows XP system,
and the file protection stuff seems to have gotten very strange. On NT,
I was able to read the same files with mutt (Cygwin) and Sylpheed Claws.
On XP, however, I find that some of my messages don't show up in
Sylpheed, though they do in mutt. In fact, whole folders which were
created in mutt appear empty in Sylpheed Claws, though mutt shows the
thousands of messages in there. By re-creating the folder from Windows
and moving the messages there, I was able to get Sylpheed Claws to "see"
the messages.
Anyone know what's going on there, or what I must do to make the message
visible? I realize this is probably more a Cygwin problem than a
Sylpheed one, but I thought someone here might be able to help. I've
had little to no luck with the mutt and Cygwin groups.
Thanks very much,
-pd
