That is strange and possible not a (direct) The Bat issue. 
I use NordVPN for years already and can receive and send mail with TB,
albeit, these processes of TB are much slower with VPN active..

I use IPs in Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Belgium and the UK.

Can't say a thing about Malwarebytes as I don't have that.
