Error when attempting to send mail

I have worked out many issues in my new freeBSD 10 install. Two big ones 
remain. The first is that maia isn't starting. I rebooted and then did a 
service maiad status. It said maiad isn't running. It should have 
started. I have it in my rc.d. When I tried to start manually, I got the 
error PID_file already exists. It gives me a running process number that 
isn't valid. This is right after a fresh boot. There is no pid file in 
/var/run/maia.

Any thoughts?

The other big problem which may be related is that when I try to send a 
message from that account, I get and error from thunderbird

Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server 
cagedlion.net timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator.

my syslog says "pid 1740 (httpd), uid 65543 exited on signal 11"

I have no idea what that is about.
