Hi folks, It’s certainly been a long time since I’ve seen any real activity on this list, but it’s encouraging to see that there are still some people out there using Maia in one form or another. Or perhaps it’s a bit sad that in all these years you haven’t found an alternative product that you like better; i.e. other developers haven’t incorporated the features you liked best about Maia. I’m still using Maia myself, perhaps unsurprisingly, but its limitations are beginning to show, and of course like all aging software it becomes fragile—updates to any of the components it relies on could break it at any time, whether it’s a PHP module, or PHP itself. I’m actually kind of impressed it hasn’t broken on the Perl module end of things. Without maintenance, Maia’s days are numbered. The question, then, is whether we’re talking about just “fixing it up” to make the existing codebase work with PHP 7.x and current PHP modules, or whether this is the time to re-architect the whole thing and do something a bit more ambitious. Both of these would require an investment of time, and usually that has been the big obstacle to overcome—I’m working full-time these days in the health care field, so free time has been precious to me. On the other hand, COVID-19 has graciously provided a lot of us with “time off” to work from home, so it’s looking like I may have a block of time to work on a project like this. (Hey, if Newton came up with his best work while cooped up during the Great Plague of London, the rest of us can surely get *something* done, right? ;) Anyhow, for the moment let’s just focus on that question: (a) Update Maia to work with PHP 7.x (i.e. no redesign, no new features) or (b) Ground-up redesign with fresh ideas and tech (i.e. Maia 2.0) It looks like we may have a few months to make some real progress on this, so which direction would you like us to go? Cheers, Rob _______________________________________________ Maia-users mailing list [email protected] http://www.renaissoft.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/maia-users
