'smarty" won't work. I just did a quick test on my local maia server.

This works:

# ll /usr/share/php/

lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root    8 Apr 22 09:00 Smarty -> Smarty2/
drwxr-xr-x. 4 root root 4096 Mar 22 11:41 Smarty2

This fails:

# ll /usr/share/php/

lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root    8 Apr 22 09:00 smarty -> Smarty2/
drwxr-xr-x. 4 root root 4096 Mar 22 11:41 Smarty2
