I happen to have a huge number of other things I have to do this week
and next, but, given that more than one person said they were interested
in keeping Maia alive and the success with the Perl bits, I had planned
to work on the PHP bits some time soon. I would be happy to contribute.
My basic plan was to setup a Debian server and hack on the PHP until it
works.

I suspect that most of the PHP hacking will be locating and installing
updated dependencies and making and related code changes (particularly
to the code that checks the dependencies). For dependencies, my
preference is to use standard Debian packages as much as possible. In
the ideal case, there will be usable Debian packages for all the
dependencies on the standard Debian distribution servers.
