Well, that's a bummer. This certainly isn't recommended since versions 
and changes are tracked together, but it will absolutely work in a 
pinch. So, no harm done!

Absolutely. I would recommend using something like 
https://www.purplehat.org/?page_id=16 to get started. It's out of date, 
unmaintained, and unsupported, but the steps still reflect what needs to 
be done to get Maia-Mailguard running on a FreeBSD system.
