http basic authentication required?

I've just tried to install Zoe 0.5.8 on a RedHat 8 Linux box with Java j2re1.4.2_03. Starting zoe works fine, and there are no obvious messages in the debug log. Running lynx from localhost works fine (although not very pretty!) but when trying to access from another host, I get basic http authentication required,with username and password. I've tried my local login with no luck. I've looked in the wiki and can't find anything about this: is there something I can configure to get this to work?
