"connection refused" most likely indicates that your mail account is 
not setup properly.

Double check the host and port number you are trying to connect to.

Make also sure they are reachable from your machine.

You can try to telnet to it. For example, to check if mail.mac.com is 
reachable:

telnet mail.mac.com 143

For SMTP:

telnet smtp.mac.com 25
