Very Slow In Firefox on XP

My default browser is the newest version of Firefox, running on most recent version of XP SP2. This is a new install of XP and a new install of Sun Java. 

Under IE, Zoe is it's normal speedy self, but in Firefox it is painfully slow to search, open messages, or opening any link to view messages, etc. 

Any help appreciated. I hate using IE.
