Zoe obliterated my IMAP mail!

While using Zoe, a peculiar thing has occurred: Most of my messages 
have disappeared from my IMAP server have been deleted. I have 
"leave messages on server" checked in the account configuration, and 
even stranger, not all of the messages are gone. Very old and very 
recent messages remain! I'm interested in the cause of this, and even 
more interested in knowing how to get the messages (which 
are cached in Zoe) back onto the server. What is the best way to 
"export" messages from Zoe?
