I don't know the facts on this issue, but I am willing to bet that the insurance company will not pay, (unless the level of scrutiny makes them decide sticking to the policy would be a pr disaster), precisely because they failed to opt in to readily available fire department service. They rate your premiums based on how far you are from a hydrant, I can't believe that a homeowner's policy wouldn't require you to opt into fire department coverage when and where available. mike F.
