I think it must have been more than "personal"; he was there as part of a 
group that's involved in church-planting, or something like that.  I 
suspect it's just how people in his line of work talk.

Still, if evangelism -- i.e. persuading other people to accept your 
beliefs -- is your business, then it's odd that you wouldn't actually talk 
the way that normal people talk.
