As far as I'm concerned, River's story arc is now complete.

I have no problem going forward with new members fitted into the crew. It
has the air of authenticity. We can never entirely pick who will be around
us for large chunks of time, which sets up conflict.

If I had the responsibility to sacrifice two characters, I would have
sacrificed River at the end of Serenity, having completed her
transformation. Her story is essentially over. And then, I would have
considered letting Zoe have a heroic death. I realize that's just splitting
up one of my favorite parts of Firefly, a healthy married couple, in a
different way. Here's the thing - there's still so much of Inara's story
that has not been told. Is she immortal? What about Blue Sun and the blue
hands guys? Sacrificing Zoe would leave Mal even more alone, and without his
crutch, his support. He would be forced to be even more stalwart, and that
would torment him even more (which, to be frank, makes for compelling
storytelling).

In addition, I would have Inara's presence be more sporadic, leaving without
announcement and being gone for periods of time without explanation,
obviously bent on some unspecified personal mission. Maybe she's taking on
Blue Sun by herself and we only gradually become aware of that. I'd like to
see what she's capable of, and I think less of her makes the time she is
there more dear, more valuable.

I could see bringing on competition for Mal, somebody with obvious authority
who challenges Mal, not overtly, but with his very competency. Mal's a
pretty devil-may-care guy, and bringing on somebody with a little more focus
could make for some interesting interactions.
