Losing Wash seemed pointless and cruel, but Wash seemed most expendable to me. Losing Book, on the other hand, stung. Book was the strongest character who had been given least to do. It was as if Joss didn't know anybody with strong, active faith, and simply didn't know what else to do with him. Instead of pushing himself, he sacrificed Book on the altar of expediency. It was a frankly cowardly thing to do. Getting rid of Book is easy for Joss. I would have preferred for him to continue to walk the path less traveled where the Shepherd was concerned.
