The more accurate word is 'ignorant.' It conveys the sense that some people
really don't know any better. They don't read for pleasure, and have never
been (or haven't lately been, at least) instructed in the fine distinction
between 'regardless' and 'irregardless.' Further, if you hear a word used
often enough, you think it's correct. That's not entirely on the ignorant
one. People use the phrase 'souped-up' all the time when they should write
'suped-up,' as a shortened version of 'supercharged.' People who don't grok
that distinction aren't necessarily stupid, merely ignorant. See also 'begs
the question.' Everybody gets this wrong. Frankly, when somebody says 'that
begs the question' to mean 'that raises the question,' I understand what
they mean even if it isn't what they said. That's also a case of ignorance
rather than stupidity.

Being stupid means lacking ordinary quickness and keenness of mind; dull. It
suggests a person is not capable of getting such things right, even with
instruction. That's a very cynical view of people I don't hold. People may
be stubborn, but I don't for a moment think most people are stupid.
