Indeed, and this leads to all sorts of interesting questions:  How is it 
that Jessie and Stinky Pete know that they are vintage toys but Woody does 
not?  Are memories wiped when toys transfer to new owners, perhaps?

We do know from TS2 that Woody is an old family toy (Andy's mom says so 
when the toy collector offers to buy Woody at the yard sale -- and this is 
significant, because Andy's mom frequently tries to get rid of Andy's 
*other* toys, or offers them up for sale, etc.), and we know from TS1 that 
Woody has been Andy's favorite "since kindergarten".

It's also strongly implied that Andy does not have a father; we never see 
him with one, not even on Christmas Day at the end of TS1.  So perhaps 
Andy's mother was moving the family to a new home at the end of TS1 
because Andy's dad had died or abandoned them (his departure *must* have 
been recent, given that Andy's sister Molly is only 1 or 2 year olds in 
TS1), and the old house had too many memories for her.

I'm inclined to think that Woody used to belong to Andy's dad.  But he 
could just as easily have belonged to one of Andy's mom's male relatives. 
In any case, TS2 establishes that Woody is a vintage toy created in the 
mid-1950s (Stinky Pete tells us that Woody's TV show was cancelled after 
the launch of Sputnik, which was in 1957), and that he belonged to some 
other family member before becoming Andy's favorite in the 1990s.

Of course, TS2 *also* seems to establish that Woody has no memory of his 
previous owners, hence he has no idea what will become of him once Andy 
grows up.  This is problematic, if you look at it too closely, but I can 
suspend my disbelief for the sake of the larger points that TS2 makes.

The problem with TS3 is that it *makes* us look closer at some of these 
questions.

And what did showing it accomplish, that forecasting it in TS2 did not?
