Well, let's not confuse the issues here.  In Empire, the movie that turned
Vader into Luke's father, Luke's sister and Princess Leia were still two
different characters.  It wasn't until they wrote Jedi that Lucas, who was
getting tired of Star Wars and didn't want to do any more sequels, decided
to merge the two characters so he didn't have to introduce the sister.

another untrained jedi, the other hope Yoda mentioned.

You mean, the redemption would have been more compelling if Luke had *not*
been motivated by a family connection?

**no, it would have been better if Vader had not been compelled to save luke by
his relationship.  As it was, the whole gotta go save dad, and then dad saves me
bit was so frigging lame and unoriginal.
