Like I said to Mike a little while back, our point isn't what a given murderer deserves but what we as a society want to dish out.< I'm sure society would rather not have a criminal justice system at all. And as soon as you can figure out a way to get rid of crime we'll be happy to get rid of it. And what if society, say like one in Europe, decides it doesn't even want to "dish out" life sentences? What society may or may not want, to the extent that is even an appropriate way to frame this, is irrelevant to what justice requires.
