But both words sound the same so if all you overhear is fat/phat how are you to 
know?  Should people never use the word for fear of offending?  

 
I think the best way to deal with being offended by the word fat is to lose 
weight, and I hope you know I'm including myself in that.  Can people be mean 
with words? Of course, but do you really want to give them that much power over 
you?
