One of the complications is that with the recent attempts, conventional searches are useless. The panty bomber last year is why we have this now, as traditional methods did not stop him. The trouble is that there were plenty of other reasons to suspect the guy, but they were not heeded, so we had a near miss. In a sense these new measures are punishing us for the TSA's failure last year.
