My oldest, bestest friend -- someone I've known since Grade 2, since the
fall of '77 -- has been living in Australia since the late '90s, and he
hasn't been back to visit Vancouver since a few months after my twins were
born in early '06. But tonight, just now, I had a half-hour video chat
with him via Skype, and I even got to say "hi" to his fiancee and her son.
And I paid not one penny for the privilege of doing any of this.

"Age of wonders." It's a phrase I use often, usually when talking to my
wife, whenever I'm impressed with whatever the technology lets us do these
days. But I'm really *feeling* that sense of awe right now.

Oh, and while waiting for the Skype chat to start, my dad alerted me to
the fact that we can now make phonecalls anywhere in North America for
free by using the phone-chat feature on our Gmail interface. And I tested
this immediately by calling him that way mere seconds after he e-mailed
me. (Admittedly, the call wasn't long-distance, but the fact that I could
make the call *at all* was still impressive, at least to me.)

I'm sure a lot of this stuff is old hat to some people here, but hey,
better late than never, and all that.
