Well, I was being rhetorical.  He has decided the need outweighs the law.  Good
for him.  If his belief is firm, he won't mind facing possible prosecution.

I doubt he will, but he certainly could, and he should be willing to stand for
that belief.

He didn't claim that was Wikileaks' "standard" for publication, he claimed that
was Wikileaks' track record.

Anyway, "need" needs to taken in context; as in, what is it necessary *for*?
And we can certainly argue back and forth on why X is a good and important goal
and how Y shows that Z is necessary for X.

But if I had to guess at what Assange mean by "need" and what measurements
Wikileaks uses, I'd look at the concluding paragraph in the article: the US
Supreme Court said "only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose
deception in government".  Or perhaps I'd look at the first paragraph on
http://wikileaks.ch: "material of ethical, political and historical significance
while keeping the identity of our sources anonymous, thus providing a universal
way for the revealing of suppressed and censored injustices."  Or perhaps I'd
look at http://wikileaks.ch/about.html, section "1.3 Why the media (and
particularly Wiki leaks) is important", or section 3 "Short essays on how a more
inquiring media can make a difference in the world".
