He had no "duty," ceremonial or otherwise, to stand there and take questions. If I understand these things correctly, the press is there at the President's convenience, not the other way around. It's was a matter of convention, not "ceremony." As far as "etiquette" goes, I really, really, *really* don't give a sh!t, particularly if it involves something as meaningless as manufacturing soundbites to temporarily satiate the rabid, vapid, and voracious 24-hour, newsmedia.
