He had no "duty," ceremonial or otherwise, to stand there and take
questions. If I understand these things correctly, the press is there
at the President's convenience, not the other way around. It's was a
matter of convention, not "ceremony."

As far as "etiquette" goes, I really, really, *really* don't give a
sh!t, particularly if it involves something as meaningless as
manufacturing soundbites to temporarily satiate the rabid, vapid, and
voracious 24-hour, newsmedia. I've had quite enough of that routine,
and while the President ducking out of a press conference early to
hang with his wife isn't exactly a revolution, I can't fathom why
anyone would care.
