Maybe I'm going off the deep end but I see that argument as more hide the 
ball, "quick, look over there" distraction techniques to keep the masses 
from focusing on the real issues of fraud and corruption in high places.  I 
think the grifters and greedheads are extremely happy that "the poor you 
will always have with you" it gives them a convenient fall guy.

I'm not saying at all that you are making that argument just that I'm 
starting to see the class warfare being played both ways.  I've been aware 
of the class warfare played by the left for a long time and thought it was 
garbage.  I've lately become more aware that the corporatists and big money, 
(I know the labels are trite but I'm going for convenience in this 
instance), are employing it just as well and it is at least as disgusting. 
At least when someone who is poor engages in the politics of class warfare 
they are doing it from a place of need and/or not having means/money/power 
etc. - even if I disagree I can understand it.  I can't understand those who 
already "have" it engaging in it.  I can understand wanting something you 
don't have - I have a harder time stomaching having a lot of something and 
wanting even more.  I know they are flip sides of the same coin but the one 
side seems much sleazier to me.

Is it proverbs or Ecclesiastes that has the verse to the effect of "Oh how 
the wicked prosper" ?

There is nothing new under the sun.  That one I know is from Ecclesiastes.

FWIW, the illegal-immigration watchdogs have argued that the two things
are linked, inasmuch as the people who bought more homes than they needed
were probably buying homes built by illegals and then renting them out to
illegals in order to pay down the mortgages, etc.  And Bush's policy of
relaxing lending standards for minorities went hand-in-hand with his
policy of being soft on illegal immigration, etc.

Or so the argument goes.
