Mormons

Not sure if we've ever discussed Mormons here, but over the past  
couple of nights we watched the Frontline series on Mormons.  What a  
devastating critique on that religion.  I was expecting a fluff piece  
on it and was surprised to see just how tough they were on it.

One of the things I hadn't really considered was just how American  
that religion is, in fact it is perhaps the only truly American  
religion.

I was also amazed at just how quickly it grew in early America and  
what a fertile culture it must have been with all the rural revivalism  
and superstition that such fantastic claims of divine revelation would  
be so eagerly embraced.

I wondered if there could have been a similar cultural dynamic at work  
during the early Christian days.

We visited the Mormon temple in Salt Lake City Utah this summer as  
tourists to see what all the fuss was over and were proselytized by  
some young mormon women while visiting Brigham Young's house.  High  
pressure.  They were eagerly seeking out an argument.

Anyhoo...I now know more about Mormons than most any non-Mormon  
could.  And I'm more convinced than ever about it's cultish-ness.   
Then again, there are elements of Christianity that could be described  
in much the same way too.
